Meet Miss Gannon

Hello there! As we begin an amazing year together I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Kate Gannon. This is my sixth year teaching Kindergarten and my third year at Chicago Public Elementary. Prior to teaching here I taught over seas in Zambia, Africa for three years. That was an amazing opportunity! I have a genuine passion to teach and help children grow in knowledge. One of the missions for my classroom is not only to see the children improve greatly in their learning of academics, but also learning the important values of everyday life. Respect is my number one expectation in the classroom. This year is going to be a full year packed with challenges and fun while learning together. Thank you for being interested and a part of your child's education! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Spanish Spelling

This September we will be starting "Spanish Spelling" time. The students will be learning seven new vocabulary words every two weeks. These words will be very basic words that will correspond with our other lessons. Together, the students and I will practice the pronunciation, spelling, and meaning of each word. I think it is very important to expose our students to other languages at a young age. This time in their life is the time when they absorb and remember language the most! We do not want to take this for granted!

Remember Reading Time

This past week I introduced "Remember Reading Time".  Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I will be reading a short story at snack break. After snack break we will have "Remember Reading Time". The students will be given a sheet of computer paper, and asked to draw a picture of a certain part of the story. This exercise allows the students to be creative, but more importantly strengthens their ability to comprehend and recall information. This week we will be starting with the book titled "Giraffes Can't Dance"

Safari Science

Following the field trip this month, we will be working on an in class assignment, talking about the many animals we saw. During our science unit that week we will be labeling pictures of the animals and comparing the differences between them. We will also discuss the importance that each animal has on earth. Get your child 's thought process going by asking them what animals were their favorites at the zoo, and why!

Health Happiness

What makes our bodies happy? We recently started talking about this topic in class.  The goal is to make the students aware of the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. We started by talking about smart eating choices. What is better for our bodies? An apple or a piece of cake? What are ways we can be active? The students were excited to learn that is it good for us to run around at recess time! We need to be active, make smart eating choices and continue to learn to take care of our bodies!

Classroom Calendar Time

Each morning we start the day with Classroom Calendar Time. The students have each had an opportunity to be a "Happy Helper" for this time. The "Happy Helper" uses the pointer stick to show the rest of the class the date, weather, and so on. For many, this special privilege makes the child's day:)  As the year continues, the students will be becoming more familiar with the days of the week and months because of the songs they are learning! Encourage your children to sing these fun songs to you to help them learn!
